We are getting married in Siena, Italy!
Thank you to everyone for taking the time and energy to make the trip. We know it’s not the easiest place to get to, but you'll be rewarded with a gorgeous medieval city surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan countryside and many vineyards. We’ve spent several special moments in Siena over the years and are looking forward to sharing this charming place with you all. We hope you’ll enjoy it!
There are 3 major airports to choose from:
Pisa
Convenient and often cheapest for those travelling from (or connecting in) the UK/Europe. Served by British Airways and budget providers Ryanair, and Easyjet. Around 1hr 45 mins drive to Siena.
Florence
Nearest and also convenient when arriving from (or connecting in) Europe (eg. London/Madrid). It’s around 1hr 10 minutes drive to Siena.
However, it’s often a more expensive airport to fly to than Pisa or Rome. Direct trains run regularly to Siena.
Rome
Fiumicino Airport (FCO) - where many long-haul (transatlantic) flights arrive (eg. New York, Boston, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta). If you want to avoid connecting elsewhere in Europe, this is your best option.
Ciampino Airport (CIA) - only really for budget European flights (Ryanair & Easyjet), but we highly recommend that those travelling from the UK/Europe fly to Pisa instead.
See further details on how to reach Siena from the different airports further below ⬇️
Train:
Italy has a great regional train network that can be quite inexpensive when booked in advance. There are direct trains between Florence and Siena that run multiple times per day, and indirect trains from most other cities. You can book tickets directly on: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
Car:
Travelling by car gives you the best opportunity to visit the surrounding Tuscan towns, vineyards and countryside if you're planning a longer trip. The roads in Northern Italy are nothing to be concerned about, and generally car rental is inexpensive. If you're landing in Pisa, we'd recommend Centauro for car rental, as we've used them repeatedly without any drama.
Parking in Italian cities (including Siena) can be extremely difficult, so plan ahead! See advice regarding parking in Siena below.
Further travel information
FLORENCE (Amerigo Vespucci Airport): The nearest airport to Siena is Florence. If you’re flying long-haul (ie: transatlantic) it might be worth considering connecting in Madrid or London, and continuing on to Florence, as public transportation connections to Siena are the simplest.
From Florence Airport you can take a train into the main, central Florence train station (Firenze Santa Maria Novella). From there, there are a number of regional trains that go to Siena (approx 1.5 hrs). If you’d rather rent a car from the airport, you can drive to Siena in about an hour.
ROME: If you’re travelling from the Americas and want to avoid connecting elsewhere in Europe, the nearest long-haul international airport is Rome. Note that Rome has two airports: Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Ciampino Airport (CIA). Fiumicino is the one where most long-haul flights land and though further than Ciampino, it has better public transport connections into the city centre. A train will get you into the main train station (Rome Termini Station) in 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, Siena is not on the same high-speed train line that connects Rome to Florence.
So, from Rome, you have the following public transportation options:
1. Trains (from Rome Termini station)
Take the high speed train north to Florence (no stops) and then one of the many regional trains back down to Siena
Take a regional train to “Chiusi-chianciano Terme” and then connect to a different regional train to Siena (3 hr 15 min total)
2. Bus (from Rome Tiburtina Bus station)
The final public transport option is to take a direct bus to Siena (2 hr 45 min) with FlixBus (book here). Be sure to select the bus that arrives at the Siena train or bus stations, as there are some buses that drop you off too far from the old city centre.
Alternatively, you can rent a car at FCO Airport and drive to Siena in about 3 hours.
PISA: We highly recommend that everyone flying from the UK/Europe fly to Pisa. It’s a small, simple airport where mostly budget airlines land, but there’s a short train into the main train station (Pisa Centrale). From there, there are multiple trains a day to Empoli, where you’ll do a quick connection, and then onwards to Siena (1hr 45 min total)
Parking in Siena
Parking in Siena is one of two things: tricky or expensive. Siena is a medieval city surrounded by an ancient wall. Most hotels and Airbnbs can be found inside the walls, but cars are heavily restricted from entering (basically, only taxis and city buses can enter). Some hotels offer parking, or parking outside the old city walls and then a shuttle service into the city centre.
If you want to avoid paying for parking, we suggest parking outside the old city walls and then calling a taxi to take you to your accommodation. You won’t need a car whilst staying in central Siena, as everything is a short walk away.
Here is a list of car parks (including one free option — a residential road — outside the city walls, where we parked for several days back in 2022): Parking in Siena Google Maps list
Taxis & Ubers in Siena
There is NO Uber or any other ride sharing / taxi app in Siena! Thankfully, once you’ve arrived at your accommodation, you’ll be able to walk everywhere in town, as Siena is small. Please see this map for taxi stands located in the city.
Call +39 0577 49222 to order a taxi.
We will be providing transportation for the wedding for people staying in central Siena. If you’re staying in the countryside, you must pre-book a taxi (or a private transport service) to/from the wedding as taxi services are very limited at night.
Accommodation
As our wedding venue only has a handful of rooms, we're unfortunately not able to accommodate most guests at the wedding venue.
We'd highly booking well in advance as September is still peak season in Siena. Please see the Accommodation page for more information.
